The open-air cinema “Anoixis” in Heraklion, Attica was established in the 1950s and for more than three decades enjoyed great popularity, primarily screening Greek productions and family-oriented films. From the 1990s onward, however, the cinema gradually declined and at one point faced the risk of demolition and redevelopment into an apartment building. In 2003, the site received protected land-use status, ensuring the preservation of its cultural function. The cinema remained closed between 2008 and 2012, before being renovated and restored to operation. Today, surrounded by greenery and offering seating for approximately 200 spectators per screening, the “Anoixis” open-air cinema has regained its place as a beloved cultural meeting point for residents of Heraklion Attikis and visitors from the wider area.
