In the 1950s, the area known as Retheria in Heraklion was a large open space of bare earth, surrounded by trees. A bus stop at its centre and the railway lines heading towards Lavrio connected Heraklion with the outside world. Over the years that followed, the empty dirt road was paved and became the EHS (“Hellenic Electric Railways”) Square, and later the October 28th Square: the central square of Heraklion. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the square was laid with flagstones while café tables spread throughout, creating a meeting point for the city. Today the square remains a place of social gathering, with an atmosphere that echoes those earlier times.
