Agios Georgios Church (Saint George)

The Church of Saint George is one of the oldest and most historic churches of Heraklion, closely connected to the religious and social life of the area since the 18th century. Historical records indicate that the earliest form of the church dates back to that period, reflecting the long-standing presence of Christian worship in the region. The present-day church was founded in 1929 and consecrated in 1938, continuing a centuries-old spiritual tradition on the same site.
Architecturally, the church was built in Byzantine style with a central dome, while its interior decoration holds particular artistic and religious importance. Among its most notable features are the fresco of the “Theophany” behind the icon stand, the despotic icon of the Baptism, and the icons of the iconostasis depicting Christ, the Virgin Mary, Saint John the Baptist, and Saint George — all created by the renowned iconographer Fotis Kontoglou.
Early Christian archaeological finds dating to the 4th–7th centuries AD have been discovered in the surrounding area, reinforcing the historical continuity of the site. The church celebrates the feast of Saint George in great splendour and remains a timeless spiritual and social point of reference for the city.
