The Fix Brewery is not only the oldest brewery but also the first industrial enterprise established in the modern Greek state. Its founder, Johannes Karl Fuchs — Greeks pronounced it ” Johann Karl Fix” and he adopted it — was born on 3 January 1832 in Mühldorf, Bavaria, where he studied the craft of brewing. The establishment of the Bavarian Military Colony in the area of Heraklion, Attica, under King Otto encouraged many Bavarian families to settle there. In 1850, following his father’s murder, Johann settled permanently in his family home in Old Heraklion, located at 511 Irakliou Ave.. Fix set up a small brewery in the courtyard of his house, which also operated as a tavern, serving the beer he produced to the Bavarian officers stationed in the area. It was the first brewery in Greece and survives to this day. Despite the hard economic conditions in Greece at the time, this entrepreneurial venture proved successful: beer was in great demand and gradually won over Greek customers as well. To this day, the FIX brand remains one of the most recognizable and enduring brands in the history of Greek beer production.
