At the top of Holy Trinity Hill, also known as Koumanoudis Hill, in Heraklion, Attica, lies the oval-shaped square surrounding the Agia Tirada church (Holy Trinity). For decades, the square has welcomed pilgrims and visitors attending the church and the traditional fair associated with its religious celebrations. The landscape of the area during the early 20th century is vividly captured in the writings of the Ionian-born film director, screenwriter, and playwright Giorgos A. Michailidis in his novel Myisi (Initiation). Describing the western slope of the hill during the 1930s, he writes that it “was filled with orchards and blazing wheat fields like great amber sheets or colourful stretched blankets,” evoking the rural character and natural beauty that once defined the area. The fair was also frequently referenced in contemporary accounts, among them a 1929 article in the newspaper Skrip, which described crowds of pilgrims and excursionists gathering not only at the temporary church but also on “the most picturesque little hill upon which it stands and from which the view is altogether enchanting.
