Agia Triada Metropolitan Church (Holy Trinity Cathedral)

The first Church of the Holy Trinity was erected in the early 20th century, in a prominent position at the top of “Koumanoudis” hill. The area’s first residents — mainly railway employees and craftsmen, as well as a number of Athenian merchants — initially constructed a makeshift wooden church. During the early 1920s, work began on the construction of a larger stone-built church. Although the project had advanced significantly, structural problems caused by poor workmanship forced the building committee to demolish the partially completed structure and begin construction anew. Once these difficulties were overcome, the church was founded in 1930 and consecrated in May 1936. It is a Byzantine cross-in-square structure with a central dome and occupies an area of approximately 500 square metres. Its interior iconography was completed in 1985 by Vasileios Brousalis, a student of the renowned iconographer Fotis Kontoglou. The church also features a finely carved wooden iconostasis (temple), while its oldest icon dates back to the 17th century. Among its treasured ecclesiastical objects is an embroidered epitaph (funeral cloth) of Russian origin. The Church of the Holy Trinity celebrates on the feast of Pentecost (Holy Spirit Monday), when thousands of the faithful gather to venerate.
