Agios Nektarios Church (Saint Nektarios)

The Church of Saint Nektarios was erected by the Christian Association “”Saint Nektarios of Aegina,”” founded in Heraklion in 1962. In 1974, by decision of the Metropolitan Council of the newly established Holy Metropolis of Nea Ionia and Nea Philadelphia, the church was officially declared a parish church and was consecrated on 6 October 1974 by Metropolitan Timotheos I.
It is a simple basilica without a dome, covering approximately 160 m². It includes a women’s gallery and an underground chapel dedicated to Saint Savvas the New of Kalymnos. The finely crafted wooden iconostasis, pulpit, and bishop’s throne are works of the Wood-Carving Workshop of Volos, while the frescoes bear the signatures of contemporary Greek iconographers. The church celebrates on 3 September and serves as an active spiritual and social hub of the Kanapitsa neighbourhood.
