Cultural Centre “Ilektra Apostolou”

One of the most important cultural landmarks of the Municipality of Heraklion, Attica is the Cultural Centre “Ilektra Apostolou,” located at the corner of Kountourioti and Neotitos Streets. In the forecourt of the building stands the statue of Ilektra Apostolou, dedicated to the fighters of the National Resistance. Ilektra Apostolou was a leading figure of the Greek Resistance during the Nazi Occupation and was tortured and executed by the occupying forces on 26 July 1944.
This was the site of her home, which was donated to the Municipality, and the Cultural Centre bearing her name was erected there. Today the Centre houses the Municipal Library, the Municipal Theatre, and the Museum of National Resistance “Ilektra Apostolou” — a living space of historical memory and education, particularly for younger generations.
