The Holy Catholic Monastery of Our Lady of Mount Carmel – Holy Trinity is the only monastery of the Carmelite Order — a religious order that takes its name from Mount Carmel in Israel — to have been founded in Greece. The idea for its creation belonged to the Catholic Archbishop of Athens, Jean-Baptiste Filippousis. Construction began in 1933, on the summit of a hill commanding views of the sea on one side and the mountains on the other. In 1935, the monastery welcomed its first three founding sisters: Sister Theresa Filippousis (a cousin of Archbishop Filippousis), Sister Elisabeth, and Sister Anna. Although the monastery was largely completed by 1937, the final phase of construction was concluded on 16 October 1969.
The distinctive statue of its patron, Saint Theresa, adorns the monastery’s courtyard. Thanks to her, the so-called “”Carmel”” monastery is greatly beloved in Athens — not only among Catholics, but even among the most devoted Orthodox Christians. The monastery also holds particular liturgical importance, as the altar bread used for the First Communion of Catholics is prepared and baked within its premises.
